7.2 meter ASW 28 by HKM |
|
The following is a translated article from German model magazine columnist Rainer Welzel With a weight of slightly over 17 kg, the new highly impressive fully moulded ASW 28 took of on a grass runway under the control of Willi Helpenstein with his 3.2 meter 100cc powered Wilga and Ingo von der Forst with the controls of the ASW 28. The first flight was as everybody wishes it would be, problem free, unspectacular and always under control. To sum up our success briefly, it was extremely satisfying. The first thoughts of the construction of the ASW 28 began over 2 years ago, when the model and size were decided on. A scale of 1:2.5 was chosen for its impressive size. With a span of 7.2 meters and a fuselage length 2.65 meter, the new ASW 28 has a serious presence which was added to with an optional up and go system, custom designed and made for our new model. As project leader and manufacturer, Willi Helpenstein enlisted the help of the industries top specialists, Helmut Quabeck (layout/profiles) and Ingo von der Forst (Detail work/up and go) With the combined Know-how of these perfectionists, the designed project was handed over to the Czech fibreglass construction artists. (HKM Models nimbus 4 and ASW 27) Once again, expectations were exceeded and perfection was achieved. I don’t believe that more precise and perfect is achievable. The compromise between weight and strength is perfect. Years of experience in this field guarantee the achieved success and it shows. The Flight tests are in progress, but the results have already been noted, our goals have been met and were surpassed. Ingo describes the models flight characteristics despite its size as pleasant and easy to fly with harmonically balanced rudder effectiveness. The first stress load tests were passed without compromise or holding back. Without detailing every aspect of the test flights, the complete project form the design to detail construction to flight performance is top notch. Everything is included except for the electronics. From the tow release to the finished and fitted canopy frame to the shock absorbing retractable landing gear, a more complete model cannot be imagined. Despite its size, with a fuselage length of 2.65 meters which is the defining part of the model for transport, (Wings are sectioned like the original) the New HKM ASW 28 will find friends under the pilot group which previously limited giant scale gliders to 5 or 6 meters. 03.05.2006 Rainer Welzel The ASW 28 will be delivered with the following features Fuselage - High gloss, white fibreglass fuselage with Kevlar reinforcement - All markings and stripes painted in the mould - Wheel well doors cut out and hinged - Tow release installed - Fibreglass rudder post installed - Horizontal stabilizer mounting system installed - Servo well for elevator provided in the fibreglass rudder post - Pushrods for rudder installed in the fuse - Installed tail wheel - 20mm and 6mm wing rods installed - Canopy spring loaded hinging mechanism installed - Mounting system for shock absorbing gear installed - Seat pan and backrest for canopy detail build out provided Canopy - constructed out of a 2 piece fibreglass frame with instrument panel - spring loaded hinging mechanism in matching gray installed - clear canopy mounted on fibreglass frame Retractable landing gear - Shock absorbing landing gear installed with gas shock adjustable from 25-50kg - Aluminium mounting system for gas shock on the wing rod sleeve - Internal Fibreglass wheel cover - Solid 140mm rubber wheel with steel axel shaft - Retract rails for shock mount movement installed Vertical stabilizer and rudder - fully moulded and high gloss white - hinging system installed - installed mounting system for rudder with Allen screws Horizontal stabilizer and elevator - fully moulded fibreglass high gloss white - live hinge - carbon reinforced spar installed - 2 aluminium orientation pins installed in the horizontal stabilizer - 5mm mounting bolt aluminium receptacles installed Wing - fully moulded 4 piece fibreglass/carbon wing painted high gloss white in the mould - solid dent resistant construction - markings under the left wing painted in the mould - servo wells installed and servo covers provided - 20mm wing rod sleeve installed - aft 6mm hardened steel torsion pin sleeve installed - front 10mm threaded torsion pins provided - all wires installed and plug receptacle cavities provided - torsion pins for outer wing panels installed - carbon wing joiner for inner to outer panel (180x25x15mm) for equal stress loading of the wing installed - 500mm speed brakes installed with matching white fibreglass covers - Control horn receptacles installed - Fully moulded high gloss Plug in Winglets - Wing plan form incl. dual aileron setup fully scale Options - wing with flaps - wingspan of 6meters or - wingspan of 7.2 meters - wing in full carbon - torsion distance wing mounting bolt - sliding canopy window and scale instruments
